The foreign secretary has condemned an American decision to bar seventies singing star Cat Stevens from the US.

Stevens, who has been known as Yusuf Islam since he became a Muslim, was told he was not welcome as a "supporter of terrorism" despite his public statements consistently condemning violence.

Straw, in New York to address the UN, said the "action should not have been taken."
