Ministers backtrack on patient choice pledge

Ministers have been forced to backtrack on their pledge of offering a choice of hospitals to all patients needing operations on the NHS because of lack of capacity.

Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat health spokesman, said: "Choice is meaningless unless the NHS has the capacity to deliver."

A spokesman for the Department of Health said that only in exceptional cases would the pledge not be met.
