Tories set for higher student loan charges

The Conservatives are proposing to set an interest rate above inflation on student loans to fund the party's commitment to abolish all university tuition fees.

The policy is due to be announced in the autumn.

Currently, all students are able to take out student loans of up to £3,695 a year.

Under the Tory plan a real interest rate of up to two per cent is envisaged - enough to cover the loss of income from fees.
