Businesses reacted with scepticism to Tory plans for efficiency cuts at the Department of Trade and Industry, unveiled yesterday.

The CBI said it feared losing the voice it has in government through its access to the ministry.

And ministers criticised a lask of detail as to which areas of the department's work would be scrapped in the bid to save £748 million per year from its budget.
