Naval chief issues cuts warning

The commander-in-chief of the Royal Navy has warned the government that its proposals to axe a dozen ships means that the Navy will be unable to undertake at least two commitments in the future.

Admiral Sir Jonathon Band also said that he was prepared to accept the cuts only in return for a firm pledge that promised new aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines would arrive.
