Miliband backs GCSEs
Despite suggestions that GCSEs could be replaced by a new diploma scheme, school standards minister David Miliband yesterday said the qualification was an important "progress check" for pupils.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives proposed that children should not be allowed to leave school until they pass basic tests in reading, writing and maths.
