A Sunday newspaper reported yesterday that Kimberley Fortier, who is said to have had an affair with David Blunkett, visited the home secretary at his house shortly before allegations about their relationship were published.

The report said she asked for his private secretary to be present as a witness to avoid any misunderstanding about their position.

Blunkett’s spokesman said: "We are not going to get drawn into confirming or denying anything to do with his private life, but we are satisfied there has been no improper use whatsoever of either Home Office resources or officials."
