Barricades rise to guard Labour

Steel and concrete barriers will protect the Labour Party conference from a suicide bomb attack, police commanders revealed yesterday.

Costing £2.3 million, Operation Otter will protect the Brighton Centre and two conference hotels with a range of security measures including police marksmen.

The head of the operation, chief superintendent Jeremy Paine, said no specific terrorist threats had been received, but the possibility of an attack was in "everyone's minds".
