Town halls and Whitehall set for new council tax battle

The chancellor's 2.7 per cent spending review settlement for local authorities and demands for cost savings will lead to large council tax rises next year in order to provide the same standard of services, the Local Government Association has warned.

However deputy prime minister John Prescott yesterday called for low single figure increases from town halls.
