MPs call for harsher penalties to curb VAT fraud
Stronger penalties for VAT fraud may be needed to tackle a "staggering" £11 billion a year in revenue losses, say MPs.
A report by the Commons public accounts committee today says Customs and Excise should take advantage of its planned merger with the Inland Revenue to share information and identify traders in the shadow economy who are evading VAT.
