Ministers back tighter law on smacking

The government is backing a legislative amendment that would prevent parents using excessive force when disciplining their children.

In a vote on the Children Bill today, peers have been urged to back an amendment that would allow light smacks while outlawing more severe beatings.

However, the government has angered some child welfare campaigners by refusing to back a total ban on smacking.
