Former Conservative lord chancellor Lord Mackay of Clashfern will make a last ditch attempt to reform rather than scrap the ancient post today.

Writing in the Times as the Constitutional Reform Bill returns to the upper house, he says that the "legal system of England has benefited by many evolutionary reforms, but the sudden abolition of a key office has not formed part of that development".
