Student debt sees legal aid work fall

The legal aid system is under threat because young lawyers are turning away from it as they are burdened with student debt, MPs said on Thursday.

The Commons constitutional affairs select committee said that newly qualified solicitors and barristers increasingly opt for more lucrative commercial work so that they can pay off loans of up to £20,000 accumulated at university and law school.
