Watchdog backs greater scrutiny of schools
Local authorities should increase their financial scrutiny of schools because nobody has a clear idea how they spend £24 billion a year in public money, the Audit Commission says today.
An analysis by the spending watchdog concluded that there was no "widespread funding crisis" in schools last year and added that there was strong evidence that overall reserves in schools had risen.
