Rail subsidies exposed

The subsidy paid to Britain’s 25 train companies has hit the highest level since privatisation.

Virgin West Coast received the largest total, with the taxpayer contributing more than £22 for every passenger it carried last year.

The total subsidy rose to just over £2 billion, double the amount paid in the previous year, according to figures from the Strategic Rail Authority.
