Speaker under fire over expenses claims
The House of Commons speaker is facing questions over the expenses he claims as an MP.
Following claims published in a Sunday newspaper, Michael Martin refused to comment on whether he claims housing expenses for property in his Glasgow constituency and in London, despite there being a speaker's apartment in the House of Commons.
However, he was forced to issue a statement regarding the employment of his wife, Mary, in his Commons offices. He confirmed that she has been employed by him since 1979 to work on constituency matters.
