Environmental cost of extra housebuilding revealed

Treasury proposals to build more housing to reduce prices have come under fire for their potential environmental impact.

An unpublished report by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs finds that the building programme would lead to the loss of greenfield sites equivilent to half of greater London, while carbon dioxide emissions from domestic buildings would increase by a fifth, ruining the prime minister's plans to tackle climate change.
