Under plans being considered by ministers, food and drinks firms could agree to fund sports facilities for children.

The move, which comes in response to growing criticism of the government's lack of action on obesity, is being viewed as an alternative to a "fat tax".

The industry has indicated it is prepared to work with the government on the scheme.
