Chancellor delays spending review in renewed push for job cuts

Gordon Brown has reiterated demands for tens of thousands more civil service job losses after resistance in Whitehall to big cutbacks in key departments.

The chancellor has put back his three-year spending review, originally planned for the end of June, for at least two weeks to the week beginning July 12, the Treasury confirmed yesterday. The move came after disagreements with individual ministries.
