New crackdown on market abuse

The FT reports that the Treasury and the Financial Services Authority are poised to issue a consultation paper which aims to tighten the rules governing market abuse.

Meanwhile attorney general Lord Goldsmith has indicated that the Inland Revenue could lose its powers to prosecute in tax evasion cases following its merger with Customs and Excise.

Prosecution powers could be handed to a new independent agency, the legal chief hinted.
