Road deaths hit 3,500 a year

The number of people killed in road accidents has risen to the highest level since Labour came to power.

Last year the number of deaths exceeded 3,500 for the first time since 1997.

Road safety groups said ministers have failed to implement a series of promised reforms which would deter drink-driving and increase penalties for careless motoring.
