Councils could collect car tax
Local councils could collect car taxes under draft plans being considered by ministers.
Such a move would give more than £3.5 billion to local authorities and could reduce their reliance upon finance direct from Whitehall.
Although local government minister Nick Raynsford is said to have ruled out proposals such as a tourist tax, sales tax or local income tax, a greater proportion of national income tax could be diverted to councils.
