Michael Howard wants grammar schools in every large city in England to tempt voters back to the Conservatives.

The Tory leader believes his education at Llanelli Grammar School was the foundation stone of his career in public life.

When the party announces its new education policy next week it is expected to include encouragement for private and voluntary groups to set up grammar schools across the country.
