A diplomat whose allegations led to the downfall of immigration minister Beverley Hughes is at the centre of an alleged smear campaign.

James Cameron, the consul in Romania, has been summoned to London to face a disciplinary hearing.

He has been accused of "serious anomalies" in his handling of visa applications.

Shadow home secretary David Davis said Cameron was at the "receiving end of a dirty tricks campaign".
