Mandelson squeezed out by France and Germany

Peter Mandelson's hopes of a return to top-flight politics in Europe have been dealt a blow by France and Germany.

The Telegraph reports that the two countries have agreed a deal to fill a powerful new economic post carrying the title of Commission vice-president.

The post will be taken by a national from one of the two countries.

Tony Blair had reportedly been pushing for Mandelson to be considered for the role.
