Ministers suffer working-time setback

Socialist politicians have managed to reinsert a clause in a European Commission document that one business leader has referred to as the "nuclear option".

It facilitates abolition of the "opt-out" of the EU working time directive, which allows British employers to ask their workers to put in a working week above 48 hours.

The UK government wants to keep the opt-out.
