Pundits ponder elections options

Next month's local elections are likely to produce a complex picture that will leave voters struggling to make sense of the results, psephologists said yesterday.

According to Professor Colin Rallings of the University of Plymouth, the Tories will need to gain 200 seats in the local elections if they are to match their strong performance in 2000 when William Hague was party leader.
