Extra British troops will not be sent to sensitive Iraqi cities like Kerbala and Najaf until local Shia leaders have been given time to reach a political solution, Geoff Hoon has claimed.

Interviewed in the Guardian, the defence secretary dismissed reports that a decision had already been taken to send an additional 800 British troops to Iraq.
