The three main political parties have attempted to play down the prospect of a breakthrough for the UK Independence Party in next month's European parliament elections.
A YouGov poll for Telegraph put support for the UKIP, committed to withdrawal from the European Union, at 14 per cent, just behind the Liberal Democrats on 18 per cent.
Among those "very likely" to vote UKIP was on 18 per cent and the Lib Dems 15 per cent.
Labour insists that its vote is holding up, while Tory strategists said they did not "read too much into one particular poll".
The Lib Dems said their support had increased by five percentage points on the 1999 result.
Meanwhile, the UKIP is set to unveil Joan Collins as its latest celebrity supporter today.
