MPs to examine charity status of public schools

The charitable status of private schools and hospitals will be examined by a committee of MPs and peers set up to scrutinise the draft Charities Bill.

Under the Bill, to be published on Thursday, the schools and hospitals will have to demonstrate that they benefit the public to justify retaining their tax-exempt status.

The committee will be chaired by former health secretary Alan Milburn.
