The shadow chancellor has been forced to deny that he wants to slash public spending by as much as £150 billion.

Oliver Letwin was reported yesterday to have told economists that a second term Tory administration would reduce the government's share of GDP from 42 per cent to between 30 and 35 per cent.

Ministers lined up to condemn the plans, but the Conservatives insisted Letwin was simply setting out the reasons against the idea.
