NHS faces struggle for financial stability

The NHS faces an uphill battle to remain financially stable and make best use of additional health spending between now and 2008, the Audit Commission has warned.

Although the basic rules of financial control were good, the watchdog argued that the NHS faces "unprecedented change" likely to lead to some organisations struggling.

These include new contracts for almost every NHS employee, the creation of foundation trusts and a new information technology programme.
