Home Office to mount binge drinking blitz
As new crime statistics are released today, the Home Office will announce a summer crackdown on binge drinking in a bid to reduce violent offences.
The data is expected to show that overall crime levels are broadly stable, but will reveal a further rise in violence.
Ministers believe alcohol is the main cause of the problem, particularly among under-18s.
Police forces and local authorities will be encouraged to "name and shame" those found selling drinks to the underaged, while bouncers and security staff will be given more training in dealing with anti-social behaviour.
