Spin charge hits statistics review
A National Statistics review of data on public sector efficiency has been hit by the charge that ministers are seeking to cover-up a decline in performance.
The Conservatives claim a leaked Cabinet memo in the Sunday Times yesterday showed that, rather than trying to address the problem, the government is simply changing the way the figures are recorded.
But the Treasury dismissed the allegation, arguing that the statistics do not take account of improvements in the quality of services.
