British marksmen 'to protect Olympians'

It is reported that Scotland Yard is so concerned about the standard of security at the Olympic Games in Greece this summer that armed police may be sent to protect British athletes.

"We will take whatever measures are needed to protect the team", said a police spokesman.

The Greek government reacted angrily to the suggestion, insisting no armed foreign police would be allowed on its territory.

However, it is believed that the US and Israel are also planning to dispatch armed police to guard their teams.

The Times also reports that 100 extra officers will join the SO13 unit that investigates terrorism.
