The Strategic Rail Authority has published its plans to simplify operation of the rail network.

Under the proposals, the parts of the SRA responsible for awarding contracts to train operators would merge with Network Rail to form National Rail, a new private-sector company.

The details have been passed to transport secretary Alistair Darling, who is expected to announce the results of his review into the rail network in July.
