Shadow education secretary Tim Collins has claimed that the party is stepping back from plans to stop schools giving priority places to local children.

He told the NASUWT conference yesterday that there would be no immediate change in admissions policies under a Tory government.

He also urged teachers to defend the importance of a broad liberal education for pupils so that Britain did not just turn out "worker robots".
