Flexible working to be extended to carers

Labour is planning to introduce new rights offering flexible working to those who care for elderly and infirm relatives or friends.

Carers will now be allowed to ask their employers for hours to fit round their caring duties.

Tony Blair was set to announce the new initiative on GMTV this morning.

The idea has been championed by industry secretary Patricia Hewitt, after a similar scheme to extend rights to young parents proved successful.
