Civil service swells

Official figures released yesterday confirmed that the number of civil servants continued to rise last year even though swingeing cuts are expected to be announced this summer.

The number of permanent public servants employed by the government increased by 17,370, or 3.5 per cent, in the 12 months to October 2003

The figures also revealed that one in four of the most senior management roles in the civil service are held by women.
