Brown highlights Britain's EU role

The UK will play an important role as a beacon of economic reform in the enlarged EU, Gordon Brown said yesterday.

Speaking to Institute of Directors, the chancellor insisted that Britain will become "a leader in the enlarged Europe, the biggest single market in the world".

The FT reports that he believes America wants Britain at the centre of EU decision making.

"They [the US Treasury] want to see Britain leading the drive for reform and growth in Europe, want to help stimulate the British enterprise culture and want to build stronger links between British and American firms," a Treasury official said.
