Public finances better than Brown predictions
Official figures released yesterday showed that the public finances last year were in better shape than chancellor Gordon Brown thought in his Budget last month.
The FT reports that the news decreases the prospect of imminent tax rises to cover the predicted deficit in the Treasury's receipts.
Public borrowing was £34.8 billion in 2003/04, the Office of National Statistics said, compared to Brown's estimate of £37.5 billion.
