Frenchman Jean-Claude Trichet was set to be proposed as the next president of the European Central Bank after he was cleared of fraud charges by a Paris court yesterday.

Jacques Chirac is now likely to press for Trichet to succeed Wim Duisenberg at the EU summit in Greece this weekend.
