Tories play down poll hopes
Conservative high command has embarked on an exercise to talk down Tory expectations for next May's local elections in a bid to save Iain Duncan Smith's leadership - which has been linked to success in the poll.
Central Office has all but conceded defeat in the local government race, reports the Times.
Charles Kennedy meets senior Liberal Democrats this week to discuss how the party should respond to the "eventual collapse and disappearance" of the Conservative Party.
