Derek Simpson, the new leader of Amicus AEEU, has called on the prime minister to prevent John Spellar, the transport minister, "meddling" in his union's internal politics.

Spellar, who has been a minister since 1997, has kept an office at the union's headquarters and has been closely linked to the right wing faction which underpinned the reign of Sir Ken Jackson, Simpson's, predecessor as general secretary.
