World Service TV channel gains government approval

A plan to invest public money in a television equivalent of the BBC World Service has been backed by foreign office minister Denis MacShane.

Although such a move would anger rivals such as CNN, MacShane said: "A World Service television network that was popular and successful would do more to promote British interests abroad than almost anything else I can think of."
