A scheme began yesterday to allow heart patients facing a wait of more than six months to accept treatment abroad.

Patients will also be given a choice between the public and private sector hospitals in this country.

"Waiting times are falling for heart surgery and are falling across the NHS, but some patients still wait too long and we will continue our efforts to reduce waiting times according to the NHS plan," said health secretary Alan Milburn.
