Home Office minister Lord Filkin yesterday distanced the government from remarks made by director of public prosecutions, David Calvert-Smith.

Speaking to the BBC, the CPS chief had claimed that almost all Britons are racist.

"The government would not agree with the suggestions that everyone in Britain is racist," Filkin told peers.
