Doctors call for NHS targets to be scrapped

The British Medical Association last night called on the government to scrap performance targets, describing them as the "shackles" of the NHS.

The doctors' body also warned that the NHS was facing its "last chance".

It stressed that NHS staff should not be used as scapegoats if the government's £40 billion cash boost fails to deliver improvements.
