As the door of Number 10 swung too and fro yesterday, Stephen Byers remained firmly behind the locked entrance to his Tyneside home.

The former minister remained holed up in his constituency home - and "looks terrible" according to one neighbour who saw him venture into his back garden.

Byers signalled yesterday that he believed City investors who lost out through Railtrack were ultimately behind his downfall.
