Livestock groups have reacted angrily to recommendations by the European Union scientific committee which they claim will close businesses through increased costs and red tape.

Proposals include not tying up animals during transit and allowing a five foot gap between tiers of animals.

The Road Haulage Association and the National Farmers Union plan to lobby rural affairs secretary, Margaret Beckett, to oppose such changes.
